The central idea of the project was to conceive an open system of tangible interfaces and software modules allowing users to invent their own digital musical instruments, using a large set of musical gestures. This ensemble of hardware/software objects forms what we called the MO – Modular Musical Objects.
The project received the ANR prize (prix ANR du Numérique), in the category “Societal Impact”
The research and developments were separated in three parts.Small gesture interfaces, connecting wirelessly to a computer, were designed to sense users motions.
- Software were programmed to recognized gestures, to control and process recorded sounds, and to interact with pre-composed musical environments.
- A specific software was designed to create and manage augmented scores: INScore. It allows for the visualization of dynamic score representations and for the visualization of the performance.
